Guilt Free Indulgence at the Diabetic Dessert Trail…!

As part of the Diabetic Food Trail, Diabetic Dessert Trail was a day of guilt free indulgence for me. The event which was conceived with the objective of offering diabetics, pre-diabetics and health conscious people a reason to enjoy their food and desserts without any apprehensions, has tied up with 200 restaurants across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Pune. The Diabetic Food Trail is presented by Britannia Nutrichoice Essentials in association with Biocon, the largest Indian Insulins Company. Britannia and Biocon have once again partnered with DFT, this year along with Fitternity.com, Health & Nutrition and Burrp. Its been conceptualised by Seema Pinto, Director, Semora Entertainment Works along with her husband.

This particular dessert trail meant restaurant hopping with 4 different participating outlets showcasing their healthy desserts and it also meant that we were going to eat a lot of desserts but without feeling guilty about it, so all I had to say was bring it on..!!

img_1201

We began our sweet journey with Bercos in Greater Kailash I, in a cosy atmosphere, we were served with Sugar –Free Lemon Cheesecake (Kcals: 162.2, Fat: 14.2g, Carbs: 4.1g, Protein: 6g) and Sugar –Free Caramel Custard (Kcals: 378, Fat: 28g, Carbs: 32g, Protein: 6g). The Cheese Cake was so delicious and sugary sweet that not even for one moment it felt that it was sugar free, I simply loved it. The Caramel Custard wasn’t as sweet as the cheese cake, but it was nice too.

Our next stop was right across the road, and after one fulfilling experience we went to explore the other. Getafix too appeared a cosy and comfortable place where you could enjoy a happy meal with your family or friends. Here on the menu we had Sugar –Free Carrot Cake (Kcals: 396, Fats: 26.1g, Carbs: 37.1.6g, Protein: 4.9g) and Sugar –Free Lime Pie (Kcals: 136, Fats: 4.7g, Carbs: 21.3g, Protein: 3.1g). The Carrot Cake was simply mind blowing, dense and yet super moist, I could just go on and on with it, it was so delicious, and you must try. The Lime Pie was good too, but somehow I was hooked to the Carrot Cake.

img_1246

Our next halt was Bohemia in Greater Kailash I, N Block Mkt, the place oozed out comfort and a suave ambience. Though we were now already full from the last two indulgences, I was really looking forward to this one, because they had my favourites Sugar –Free Tiramisu (Kcals: 340, Fat: 18g, Carbs: 40g, Protein: 4g) and Sugar -Free Chocolate Fudge (Kcals: 250, Fat: 10g, Carbs: 38g, Protein: 3g). Guilt free chocolate desserts are like a dream come true. Both the Tiramisu and the Chocolate Fudge were awesome. Extremely delectable they didn’t taste as if they were sugar free, they tasted as normal as prepared with sugar. I loved them both.

img_1276

Oh, after 3 stops, this dessert trail really seemed very fulfilling, filling the stomach too :), but nevertheless, we reached our last stop, which unlike others wasn’t a restaurant, but it was a bakers den called G’s Patisserie. Here we were served Sugar –Free Warm Apple & Cinnamon Cobbler (Kcals: 237.2, Fats: 9.8, Carbs: 36.7g, Proteins: 3.5g), Sugar –Free Chocolate Zucchini Cake (Kcals: 160.2, Fats: 6.4g, Carbs: 25g, Proteins: 3.3g), Sugar –Free Banana Oats Bar with NutriChoice Essentials Oats Cookies (Kcals: 87, Fats: 1.8g, Carbs: 17.2g, Proteins: 21g). I personally loved the Apple Cobbler and the Oat Cookies, which were also live demonstrated by the owner of the place. The entire experience was worth remembering.

The Healthy Dessert Trail was introduced to give food bloggers and media a glimpse of some of the innovative and healthy desserts that restaurants in each of these cities had specially designed, for the Diabetic Food trail 2016. With desserts featuring on a larger number of menus this year, it was a perfect window to showcase these treats, while debunking the myths that desserts could only be high calorie, and hence not suitable for diabetics.

A key aspect of The Diabetic Food Trail has been to address certain myths associated with what a diabetic can and cannot eat. The most common one being that desserts are a big no no. And thanks to our restaurant partners on the Dessert trail, we were able to demonstrate how easily desserts can be made healthy yet delicious, wherein not only a diabetic, but also a regular individual with a sweet tooth could enjoy them. I am glad I was part of this journey and I really urge to the restaurants to keep continuing these items in their menu on a regular basis so that people can really eat guilt free!

FICCI organized, the first ever Foodzania, a Food Service Retail Conclave on November 18,2016 at FICCI, Federation House, New Delhi. Invited by Vickrham, owner of Foodmaniacs a food based portal, which happened to be the Online Partner for the event, we felt privileged to be a part of such a prestigious event.

img_1153 img_1155

The whole day conclave started with a nice spread of Tea, Coffee and Breakfast for the participants. The Conclave was divided into six sessions each touching a particular aspect of the Food Retail Industry. The first session touched upon the State of the Industry & Food Policy. After the welcome address by Piyush Patodia, Chairman FICCI Task Force, the session was addressed by Sh.Hem Pande, Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food n Public Distribution, (MoCA). He touched briefly on the state of Food Industry and emphasized on the need for the Industry and the Government to work closely for the benefit of the Consumer.img_6230

img_6233

The session was also addressed by Shri Pawan Aggarwal, CEO, FSSAI, who strongly believed that more n more of eateries of all tiers be recognized by FSSAI so as to be able to educate and monitor even the smaller players there by ensuring safe n hygienic food to reach the consumers.

The session saw a wide range of speakers like Mr Scott S.Sindelar, Minister Counselor for Agricultural Affairs, American Embassy in New Delhi, India. Mr Sunil Kapur, Chairman,K-Hospitality Corp, Mr Rahul Singh, Hon.Secretary, NRAI, Founder & CEO, The Beer Cafe, Mr Henrik Osterstrom, Country Food Manger, IKEA and Mr Amit Lohani, MD, Max Foods and Conveyor, Forum of Indian Food Importers. Each one them spoke about the on growing demand for the Industry to be given its due recognition by the Government to ensure further organized growth in this sector.

Session 3 namely Creating one stop shop-“Making Food in India & Ease of doing Business” was addressed by Mr Atul Chaturvedi, Joint Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy n Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Lots of grievances on part of the Industry were put forward, the main being the License Raj, which surprisingly continues to harass the industry. Multiple government departments issue licenses for the same project often over lapping each other. Another session to follow was Disrupting Food Pallet which was addressed by Mr Rajesh Sawhney, Founder, Inner Chef. The emphasis here was on the emergence of increasing online business in Food Retail and some innovative offline business models like Food Trucks, Food Aggregators and out of the box OSR models. These business ideas are in for a quantum leap in the coming years and do seem to be the disruptive force to regular Food Retail.

[easy-image-collage id=3734]

[easy-image-collage id=3735]

The session Extraordinary journey of Extraordinary Chefs saw Ms Kavneet Sawhney, Director Culinary Communications, Founder of The Gourmet High Street talk us through with Ms. Nita Mehta, Celeberity Chef, Author and now a Restaurant Owner. She traced her journey from Ms. Nita Mehta being a housewife to now a Celebrity on her own. Ms. Mehta shared her personal experiences, her trials and tribulations along her journey. A real role model for any budding entrepreneur.

img_6426

I also got a chance to get clicked with the legendary Ms Nita Mehta and she came across as a very warm person. She also shared a beautiful message for all aspiring chefs.

img_1167

The last session “Going Beyond Borders” With Celebrity Chefs Ranveer Brar and Vicky Ratnani was a really enjoyable one with their most candid comments. Everyone at the event was waiting for this finale of the conclave and looking forward to their interaction with these both celebrity chefs. Ranveer as usual had his answers ready for everything with a heavy dose of wit in them, while Vicky was at his intellectual best. I also got a chance to get clicked with my favourite chefs.

All in all a wonderful Conclave. Kudos to FICCI for organizing it and bringing forth the problems of this ever-expanding industry to the fore. The Conclave also had lunch catered by The Embassy, New Delhi.

Cocktails and Dinner was followed at the end of the conclave. I am really grateful to Vickrham and Foodmaniacs for making me a part of this amazing journey of learning about the food industry and a chance to rub shoulders with who is who of the food world.

Keeping in mind, the hectic lifestyle of today’s youth and adults, it has become extremely difficult to maintain one’s health. Upon seeing this, they will be introducing two main attractions to this edition’s Diabetic Food Trail- 1) Diabetic Masterclasses 2) Diabetic Fitness Bootcamps. The Diabetic Masterclasses will help individuals understand the ingredients, nutritional values, read packaging labels, learn exciting recipes which will help elevate the eating habits of diabetics without compromising on taste. These masterclasses will be held by renowned nutritionists and chefs across the 5 cities. With special focus on getting fit, the Diabetic Fitness Bootcamps tailored for diabetics will be conducted by fitternity.com

Millie Final awTOI
Held at the Hyatt Place, Gurugram the first Diabetic Masterclass event saw their executive chef Gautam share some interesting recipes incorporating the new range of Nutrichoice biscuits launched by Britania, keeping in mind the diabetic consumer.
The focus was to introduce you the diabetic or health conscious consumer to different recipes to fulfill their craving for sweets without running the risk of consuming sugar.
It was a really innovative and commendable effort by the chef, and I think overall its a great initiative.

As Seema PintoDirector, Semora Entertainment Works and the brain behind this initiative said, “The focus of the second edition is on Diet and Fitness in effective Diabetes management. Really a very thoughtful idea. The Masterclass held by Executive Chef Gautam was a treat to watch and a great learning curve for the ignorant as he touched upon various myths associated with consumption of sugar based sweets and it’s general intake in day to day life. All in all a nice learning experience specially for those associated with this dreaded ailment.

She said, “DFT is a great platform that enables users to experience healthy eating and manage diabetes in a fun and sustainable manner. The Diabetic Food Trail will continue to showcase special diabetic friendly menus across participating restaurants. The menus are engineered to be under a specific calorific meter with the help of chefs and acclaimed nutritionists from the country. Some of the restaurant favourites will also make it to these menus and these dishes will be reengineered to suit the requirements of diabetics.

Also for those who miss their sugar dose, the Diabetic Food Trail will also introduce a special Diabetic Dessert Trail which will allow diabetic patrons to sinfully indulge in a guilt free manner in their favourite dessert. The dessert found on this trail will use no processed sugars. I am already looking forward to be a part of this and I hope this initiative a kind thought reaches new heights sooner so that even the diabetic people can enjoy regular food and desserts guilt free.

Science behind it

myDaily Meal got together with a team of formulators and under the guidance of Dr. Ezhil Arasan, an ex-Dr. Reddy’s Research Scientist and a consultant with various nutraceutical and nutrition companies, myDaily was formulated. “The single guiding principle was that it should be ‘The Healthiest Meal Possible’ and should replace any meal completely giving entire nutrition as required by the body. It makes you full for the next 4-5 hours till your next meal”, says Sunil Rao, Co-founder, who is an SPJIMR Alumnus with almost a decade of experience in healthcare marketing.

It took more than a year to get the product right. We started with looking at the entire 334 pages of Recommended Dietary Allowance by Indian Council of Medical Research and doing various analyses to get the nutrition requirements. Then came the lab samples and post tens of iterations and hundreds of tasting sessions we have a product that we are really proud of. Saurabh was very particular that the product should taste great while having perfect nutrition profile”, says Dr. Ezhil Arasan, the scientific mind behind myDaily.

I recently tried both Chocolate and Vanilla flavours and loved them. They were very filling as well and I know for sure that if at all now I am bust in meetings or traveling, My Daily Meal is going to be my saviour and companion, so that I don’t miss out on the required nourishment. I even went a little experimentation with the Vanilla flavour and turned it into a nice strawberry smoothie by adding strawberry crush to it.

Soda Bottle Opener Wala Launches New Menu…More Delectable Dishes to Relish..!!

We are all now aware of the authenticity of Parsi and Iranian Cafes that have been brought to Delhi by Soda Bottle Opener Wala and there would be hardly anyone who would have not tried their lip smacking food. But going forward, here people not just serve real tasty authentic food, but also keep experimenting with food and bring in new items to their menu to delight their customers even more.

img_0152

img_0072

img_0071

I recently went to attend a bloggers meet for this newly launched menu of theirs at the Cyber Hub Outlet and it was a very pleasant visit indeed.

My culinary experience started with Adu Tedhu Baby Corn Fry, these thin slices of baby corn fried in a crispy batter, these were a real treat. Mostly I have eaten fried baby corns where in the full baby corn is fried, but in this case they have further sliced the baby corns like chips and then fried and hence the crispiness is far better. The green chutney dip and mayo dip that its served along with, are perfect companions to the fried baby corns and trust me you can’t keep your hands off this one.

img_0085

I also had a warm chicken soup along with this, which too was perfect.

img_0076

Next I tried Carnovire’s Bhel which was a bhel loaded with chunks of chicken and ham, which made it extremely interesting. It comes with both green chutney and saints that you can add as per your taste, mix it well and you are ready for a delectable food experience. This too is a must try.

img_0097

Up next was Chicken Chilli Cheese Pav, which was scrumptious. I loved it, the pavs were so soft and buttery and the topping of chicken with loads of cheese was simply amazing. You cannot afford to miss this one.

img_0102

Followed by this were the Boiled Egg Sandwiches, prepared in true Bombaiya style, they were amazing.

img_0111

For the mains I tried Tarela Rainbow Trout and Bombaiya Chicken Biryani. The trout was out of this world, marinated with mixed spices, this was a real delight. This is definitely one of those things that will take me back to Soda Bottle Opener Wala, that too very soon. In contrast the biryani was mildly spiced but flavoursome.

img_0137

img_0110

There were Jumbo Prawns too, which I didn’t try, but they looked inviting enough for me to try them the next time.

img_0131

For vegetarians, there was Paneer Sanju Baba with Malai Parantha and Khatu Meethu Pumpkin. They too looked delectable.

img_0113

img_0116

img_0117

For drinks I settled for the Raspberry Soda, because thats been a favourite ever since I tried Soda Bottle Opener Wala the first time.

img_0079

There was also a new soon to be launched cocktail that we got to try, BumSuckerWala which is mixed with vodka, frozen raspberry, and thyme and is an ode to this wonderful Parsi family from Karachi who made drinking Raspberry Soda popular there. It was refreshingly nice.

img_0095

Coming to my most favourite part of the meal, desserts, there were 3 wonderful things that I tried. The Caramel Custard, White Chocolate Brownie with Ice Cream and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheese Cake and I loved all three of them. The white chocolate brownie was the most surprising, because of the simple reason that we are used to the dark chocolate brownies, so both the colour and taste were very different for this one.

img_0148

img_0145

img_0144

To conclude, I had a wonderful experience at Soda Bottle Opener Wala as always, the new menu just made it worth while multi folds. So don’t waste time thinking, head straight to SBOW and I am sure you will have a great time. Bon Appetite !

Beautiful Breakfast Mornings at Chatter House

Breakfast, they say is the most important meal of the day and one should never skip it. I have been though skipping it most of the days, but recently on a bright Sunday morning, my breakfast story became very very beautiful and it was really hard to skip this one. Now who can skip a breakfast when it contains variety of things like, different egg preparations, fresh fruit salad, cold cuts, sandwiches, pancakes, waffles and even paranthas and that too under one roof. At least I could not, because just reading these items on the newly launched breakfast menu of Chatter House made me hungry.

img_9288

Called for a special bloggers table on a Sunday morning, gave me the chance to explore this wonderful culinary delight. We began by ordering Fresh Fruit Salad, and trust me I could just keep looking at it, it looked so so tempting and fulfilling. Well it alone was enough to fill one person’s stomach, but the advantage of a bloggers table was that we could share and enjoy more things than a person can actually finish off individually.

Next we tried the Spanish Omelette and Eggs Benedict. The Spanish Omelette that was loaded with roasted red capsicum, potatoes, paprika, olives and parmesan cheese was simply out of this world. I loved it and this is definitely one of those things in the menu that you should not miss. Eggs Benedict was another heavenly dish, poached eggs and chicken ham topped with a heavy drizzle of hollandaise sauce, made it really delectable.

Up next was Croque Madame with Salad, basically a classic chicken ham & cheese sandwich covered in cheese and becomes a madame when a fried egg is placed on top of it. Well the Spanish Omelette and Eggs Benedict had set my expectations pretty high and hence I found these a little disappointing. Not that they were bad, but in comparison, they ranked a little low and could have been better.

Making most of the given opportunity, we also tried the Indian Breakfast, for which we ordered Paneer Paranthas and Gobhi Paranthas. Served with curd and pickle, they were scrumptious.

img_9309

Next we ordered Waffles and Pancakes and both of them were just amazing. The waffles topped with chocolate sauce, and maple syrup was worth indulging and so were the soft, supple and utterly delicious pancakes. You cannot miss them, these are the must tries.

My overall experience of this breakfast menu at Chatter House was great, the only disappointment were the smoothies which taste too curd like and I am sure after taking our feedback constructively, the chef has already worked on it and they are good by now, as I write about them.

So don’t wait, make your mornings beautiful with a beautiful and scrumptious breakfast at the Chatter House.

But now if I tell you that Pizza Hut has made their crusts so interesting that you start eating it from the rear end and finish the crust first.

Reasons Why I Look Forward to Next Season of Asian Hawkers Already..!!

There are many food festivals, then there is Asian Hawkers, probably the best thing ever happened to the category called food festivals. I have been hooked to it ever since I went the last time and this season was bigger and better. With many more restaurants and food chains finding their way into Asian Hawkers, it had all the elements to become nothing but the best food festival ever.

With acclaimed names like Fatty Bao, Dimcha, The Grand, Le Meridian, Pa Pa Ya, Burma Burma, Bercos, Carls Juniors, and many more, this is a perfect place to find them all under one roof and make it a foodies paradise.

Here are my top picks from the season

Pa Pa Ya- From the house of Massive Restaurants that includes big names like Masala Library by Jiggs Kalra and Farzi Cafe, this Asian Kitchen is something to watch out for. Pa Pa Ya hosted a preview of their menu at Asian Hawkers as they are yet to open their restaurant in Delhi and now I am sure it will be one of the most awaited ones. Pa Pa Ya redefines your imagination of Asian Cuisine, it takes you on a gastronomic experience that is superlative in all regards. The Butayakitori Apple and Betel Leaf Tartare, which was pork belly skewers chargrilled with sichimi, mirin and soyal was delectable. The flavours that were infused in the tender pork belly were mind-blowing. The Hoisin Chilli Duck Pa Pa Ya Dog was one of the most talked about dishes at Asian Hawkers. Words alone can’t describe this delicacy.. you have to try this out once the restaurant opens and just do mmm..mmm..mmm.. its that orgasmic. Yak Udon was great to taste, it had a bowl of steamed Sudan noodles topped with tossed chicken. Worth trying. Even the vegetarians had a delightful time at Pa Pa Ya, Red Curry Infused Wild Mushroom Rangoons were a popular pick, these were deep fried Burmese dumplings that were stuffed with mushrooms and cream cheese. The presentation was just awesome, the best and the most unique things about these dumplings was that they were open from the top, unlike the all sides closed dumplings that we are used to seeing. Edamame and Chick Pea Sliders were another hit. Lotus flour buns with chick pea and edamame patties were drool worthy.

Wok Tok by the Grand– Wok Tok by The Grand, was my next halt and I can say that I was extremely happy to have chosen it. I ordered Sarawak Pepper Chicken, tender chicken pieces tossed in pepper sauce, this was an amazing dish and made for a perfect starter. I next ordered Sichuan Dumplings, and going by the popular belief, I was expecting dumplings as in like dim sums, but this was different, It was a dry chicken tossed in Sichuan sauce, but nevertheless it was very tasty and hence I wasn’t complaining. For the main course I ordered Sliced Chicken in Black Pepper Sauce with Noodles and this too was very very tasty. Wok Tok carries the legacy of the grand and hence you can expect nothing but the best from here. I was really satisfied with my culinary experience at Wok Tok.

Bombaykery– Ok now being a baker myself, this comes difficult to me, but also most naturally, I don’t have enough words to praise this amazing bakery. They are just too good, extremely addictive I must say. I normally don’t but bakery stuff from outside, but just a look at their stall and I could not resist and I ended up buying not just one but quite a few things. Their travel cakes are to die for and you have to order to believe. You should check out their Zomato page and place an order as soon as you can, you will love it. And while you are placing order for travel cakes, don’t forget to add some chocolate fudge. I tried the milk chocolate fudge and I polished away all 6 pieces by myself within a day, they are so damn addictive. Their cupcakes, macaroons and dessert jars should also not be missed. All I can say is order anything and everything and you will enjoy for sure.
