Power Woman- Gita Gopinath, the woman behind Sundri, a world class salon!

When we talk about unisex salons, most of us end up thinking it as a new age funda, but not many know that there are women who have been ahead of times, and they did this some 27 odd years ago, yes 27..

Gita Gopinath is one such woman, who not only dared to dream but also fulfilled and nurtured her dream to the extent that today she boasts of a salon that is 27 years old. Gita was married back then when she started all this, she faced some resistance from her family, more so from the husband and in-laws side, but she did not give up. She was one amongst the first batch who was trained by Blossom Kochar, back then. Once she enrolled for the program with Blossom Kochar, there was no looking back. Starting with a small salon, today she has a multistories building to call of her own. Situated in sector 14 market of Faridabad, Sundri by Gita Gopinath is one of the most reputed salons in the city. Here is Gita Gopinath at her salon..

Gita at work

Equipped with the latest technologies and trends, today Sundri is a perfect mix of modern methods and age old experience. The place is a beautiful one indeed and Gita’s personality reflects in each corner of the place. I was so surprised to find a floor place dedicated to a small library having philosophical books, on positive mindset and lifestyle, exclusively for the members of the salon, where in they can sit in peace, read, relax and unwind. Its such a beautiful thought I must say and the credit goes to Gita for thinking and planning all this along with her designer Deepa Devarajan, who helped bringing that serenity to the place. Deepa not only helped on designing this floor, but she is responsible for the overall design of the salon and its a perfect example of one power woman meeting and collaborating with the other.

Gita Gopinath with Tamanna Sing and Deepa Devarajan

Coming back to Gita, she has not just successfully taken Sundri to newer heights, but also passed on the legacy to her younger son. Karthik Gopinath, Gita’s son was a step ahead of his mother, as he not just got inclined to this business of styling at a much younger age, but also added feathers to his cap by winning prestigious competitions into hair styling in his teens itself. He is a shy dude who knows his work well and lets his work speak instead of himself. With the mother son duo putting in all their efforts at the right place, I see the future of Sundri stronger than ever. It was a pleasure meeting both of them and learning so much about their life, their struggles, their perseveration and their devotion towards their work. Its truly inspiring to meet such people who are so clear of their dreams and leave no stone unturned to follow and realise them.

Gita with her team..

I wish them both a great deal of luck, and for all of my readers, all  I urge is that do visit Sundri once, get yourself pampered with their services and you will know how different your experience will be.

Ghungroo- Delhi’s Only Dinner Theatre, An Experience Beyond Words!

Tucked away at Parsi Anjuman, Bahadurshah Zafar Road, Ghungroo is Delhi’s one and only Dinner Theatre. The concept of dinner theatre in itself is very unusual and thoughtful at the same time and Rudra Experiences are doing a wonderful job of bringing different experiences for us to explore. An absolutely wonderful experience to spend an evening with family n friends. We recently got a chance to witness this and I am so glad we went for it, and trust me I already look forward to going there again, it was so wonderful.

The music and dance show which traces the history of Delhi from the times of its first documented ruler Prithvi Raj Chauhan to its present along with the Audio Visuals is a treat to watch.

As the mesmerizing performances take you through the journey of Delhi becoming the seat of power and it’s cultural impact across India, you are literally on the edge of your seat, and can’t take your eyes off the dancers.

Its  beautifully choreographed and equally well performed and each of the act deserves accolades.
A most interesting musical journey from the Sounds of Yore to the present day. Simply enthralling one hour spent and you cant have a better form of entertainment than this.

For us it was experience beyond words can describe and we created memories for a lifetime.

After the spellbinding performances  a gastronomical delight at Angaare the open air barbecue awaited us
An authentic Indian Barbecue which served delicacies as Seekh Kebabs, Chicken Tikka, Fish Tikka, Paneer Tikka and Mushrooms.
All slow cooked with delicate spices and perfectly done.
Also to accompany the tandoori delicacies were ChickenC, Dal Tadka and Vegetables along with  Tandoori breads.
For dessert there was the Shahi Tukda and Jalebi .Both awesome.
All in all great food and is highly recommended.
A great theatre experience followed by delicious food. Sitting out in the open and enjoying the sumptuous food is a treat.

What’s New in 2017- Luxury Brands Offer Hot Discounts.. Check This Out To Know More..

With the fast increasing economy driving the upward trend of spending habits and capacity, on fashion in particular, we indians have become more aspirational ever since we started becoming brand conscious. But access to luxury labels has remained limited to only a few. Many can’t afford it while others residing in non-metro cities don’t have access to stores by such brands. Priya Lakhanpal from Gurgaon has founded The Best Price Show (TBPS) to facilitate the pockets of all such aspirational consumers with luxury labels through 16 countrywide pop-up store festivals in the coming year.

“When it comes to shopping, most Indians love to strike a hard bargain and prefer to shop where they can negotiate a good discount on a product or service. The upmarket labels being offered at discount upto 75% will definitely be something a lot us have been secretly wishing for,” ends Priya with a laugh.

With Delhi and Mumbai, TBPS also plans to penetrate Jaipur, Indore, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad among other cities since spending on fashion has spread much beyond just tier 1 cities into tier 2 and 3 cities as well. The elite class of our country is expected to grow from current 10 million to 26 million households by 2025. And according to the Top of the Pyramid 2015 report by Kotak Wealth Management, 44 percent of India’s multi-millionaires live outside metros. But lack of efficient retail spaces and low ROI values in non-metro regions discourage luxury labels to set up infrastructure there. TBPS, through its innovative model of “bridge to luxury” will help facilitate both the brands with access to a ready customer base as well bring these labels within buying capacity of consumers from such regions. “We understand that demand is primarily driven by price. Hence, I am sure our exhibitions will be in demand in non-metros as well,” shares a confident Priya.

In a scenario where retail ventures lead to a high value to be paid for stock holding and wastage, TBPS promises to offer them a new revenue stream by helping liquidate their excess stock which they have to clear off the shelves to give space to the new season’s collection, offering it on a discount with a “get it while it lasts” urgency. Along with ethnic haute couture, the pop-up stores will also feature other luxury products as well as pret culture as we have already begun to see the launch of ready-to-wear labels by designers of the likes of Tarun Tahiliani, Anita Dongre, Manish Arora as they eye India’s growing generation of young, successful and fashion-conscious millennials.

Since all luxury brands pamper their customers with an overall experience of the look and feel of the apparels coupled with an inviting store ambience, buying from such brands is a part of that experience. TBPS will allow them to communicate the brand’s promise to their customers through the use of a unique and tech-enabled physical environment to create an immersive shopping experience suited to the image of such labels. The shows will be a host to Virtual Reality shopping experience, personal styling recommendation from brands in addition to trial rooms, a cafe cum lounge area and high-tech kids’ play area.

Leveraging on her experience in luxury fashion and success in her earlier venture Hunkydori Styles Pvt. Ltd, Priya looks forward to open the door of TBPS in the capital for its first one day show “Store 1 – New Delhi” on 29th April 2017.

About the company: Founded in August 2016, The Best Price Show (TBPS) is a subsidiary brand of Hunkydori Styles Pvt. Ltd. owned by Priya Lakhanpal. The company currently has its head office in Gurgaon. For more information, visit www.thebestpriceshow.com.

The Third International Tango Festival

The New Delhi Tango School recently culminated its third season of International Tango Festival at the Eros Hotel, New Delhi. Brain Child of Kiran Bajaj Sawhney, who has been successfully running the NDTS, this festival has grown multi-folds since its inception and the next season looks even more promising, now that I have witnessed this one.

Tango is a partner dance that originated in the 1880s along the River Plate, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay and soon spread to the rest of the world.

And to teach the nuances of this intimate dance Maestros Dana Jazmin Frigoli and Adrian Romeo Ferreyra flew down from Argentina and along with Kiran Bajaj herself and Maestro Eduardo Curiel, they truly made a team of experts.

Dana Jazmin Frigoli, a choreographer and teacher. A multifaceted and sensitive artist, known around the world through her extensive and intensive path. She studied at Escuela Nacional de Arte Dramático, and worked for major companies as a performer and choreographer. She created a unique technique called TTC (Conceptual Tango Technology) which has allowed other dancers to find a way to further develop their own tango, understanding the workings of opposing energies in the body, using this internal understanding, to achieve a greater connection. With this work she needed to create a space that represents and is itself the container, of the ideas that emerged from within, and in 2005 Dni Tango opened its doors – a tango school, company and store with its own identity. In DNI Tango, professional staff (chosen by her) and outstanding teachers in various disciplines (Yoga, Contemporary Dance, Contact improvisation, Rhythm, Ballet, Theatre and others) synthesize and frame, the development of her philosophy about tango. Today DNI Tango, is recognized around the world, for its excellent teaching staff and for the group shows it has created (La Colección, Los tangos de una vida, Arealidades, La Musa del Capricho).  In 2010 Dana performed the choreography for Superclasico, a Danish film directed by Ole Christian Madsen, nominated for an Oscar under the category of Best Foreign Film. Thanks to La Musa del Capricho, and all the work performed by the DNI Company, Dana Frigoli received the award for Best Argentine Choreography of the season from Argentores 2010 – 2011.
Adrian Romeo Ferreyra Avellaneda (Province of Bs. as) he spent most of his childhood in Neuquén where, at 9 years old , he would run into tango almost by accident. As a dancer, always in contact with other dances but doomed to tango, he has worked with various companies and participated in shows, as well as conferences and competitions nationally and internationally. He has ‘trod the boards’ in the many theaters of Bs.As and visited countries such as Russia, Italy, Sweden, Germany, U.S., Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, among others. As a teacher he began his journey in the year 2002, where one of his most gratifying experiences was to provide free workshops run by the government, and work with groups of elderly people. In 2004 he met Dana Frigoli and had his first contact with TTC. After graduating from the Academia Argentina de Estilos de Tango(AC.E.T.A), he started working at DNI Tango in the year 2007. Since then he has formed part of the teaching staff at the DNI tango studio and its respective dance body , DNI COMPANY, participating in the shows: LA COLECCIÓN DE TANGOS DE UNA VIDA, AREALIDADES AND LA MUSA DEL CAPRICHO. Now, being the most senior member of staff, he works as a choreographic assistant for the COMPANY DNI and fulfills a pedagogical coordinating role within the school DNI Tango. — with Dana Jazmin Frigoli and Adrian Romeo Ferreyra.
Speaking on the Third International Tango Festival, Kiran Said, “For a short period of time every year I travel to festivals and workshops in Europe, the U.S. and Asia, to maintain contact with other artists and reconnect with students . I’m dedicating a lot of time to choreographing for several professional dance couples, this way I can create for other artists that inspire me. I am therefore able contribute from my vision, helping to bring out the best in people, proposing clear paths for creation. Also this allows me to be in the school and continue working with the company every morning , as well as doing my own training and group classes that I give regularly.”

Two workshops each day of 90 minute duration were held across 4 days and it covered the following topics

1.Walk me to the moon.
2.How to brake the axis and live to dance!
3.Timings for the dance floor.
4.”Los Mareados” turns in closed embrace
5.Embelishments for men and women
6.Combinations of movements out of axis
7.Musicality, different tools to play with the music
8.Elasticity movements

Glimpses from the workshop

[easy-image-collage id=5534]

N number of people registered for the workshop making it a bigger success. The finale saw top 5 couples performing while numerous of people watched them dance. The top 3 were then selected and given prizes and accolades by the Maestros. But the real deal was watching the Maestros perform, their performance was breathtakingly beautiful. I could not take my eyes off them even for a moment, it seemed like poetry in motion. The moves, the poise, the postures with which both Dana and Adrian danced was truly outstanding. Here is a small glimpse

The finesse that they bring to the performance is unmatchable and I bow down to such talent. In fact the ones who participated in the workshop also seemed like experts in the making and here is a glimpse when so many people where on the floor.

And watching Kiran herself dance is always a pleasure which I cant explain in words, because she is someone who I admire not just a dancer, but as a complete woman. She truly is a woman of substance and I am thankful to her for inviting me to witness such a fine event and giving me an opportunity to meet such wonderful talents from across the globe.

Becoming Assiya- Book Launch and Review

The book was formally launched on 21st February, at Office Office CP, attended by a select few invitees and family and close friends.
It was a small intimate affair to laud the efforts of a young twenty year old girl whose efforts had borne fruit in the shape of her maiden book, BECOMING ASSIYA.

A word first about the young debut making author, SIMRAN KESHWANI.
She is a Final Year literature student at the Lady Shri Ram College for women, University of Delhi.
She is actively involved in several social causes and is working selflessly to change the world for good, one word at a time.

Kudos to Simran for choosing a very sensitive subject for her very first book, few dare to do so.
It is a tormenting story of a misplaced Syrian refugee and her trials n tribulations encompassing a world full of hatred.

Her journey right from her birth through the ravaging War and it’s bone chilling consequences to the tireless effort to reclaim her lost identity form the crux of this spellbinding tale of a physically and mentally ravaged young Assiya who amidst all the bloodshed, violence and extreme torture still manages to hang on to HOPE!!!!!!
HOPE for herself, her fellow human beings and the COUNTRY she belongs to SYRIA.

The canvass is a horrifying story of people of a war ravaged Syria and Simran’s portrayal of the same is captured in all it’s blood n gore. Fabulous writing which keeps you turning pages but also makes you stop inbetween and makes you think hard at what kind of a world are we a part of?
What kind of a legacy is this world going to leave for generations to come!!!!!

A really commendable piece of writing from this young upcoming author.

I am sure she is here to stay and make a name for herself in the literary world.

A MUST READ.

InLiving at India Design ID

As we all know India Design Expo is one of the most talked about exhibitions when it comes to interiors and furniture. The brand that participate in ID are a level above then the rest. The moment you walk through the pavilion, you get awe struck by many such brands and one such collection was by InLiving.

InLiving uses the art of handcrafting to add a personal touch, and offer unmatched finesse and style. At the India Design 2017 decoration pavilion, there was a display of innovative products and novel designs by InLiving. Their new collection, by the in-house designer’s team, included wooden wall  art, wooden panels & dividers and cabinets that drew a lot of eyeballs to the booth.

The idea behind designing of this collection was to perk up the living spaces by throwing in some playfulness by way of colors, textures, shapes to break away from the monotony. InLiving used reclaimed wood to make the stunning wall arts and weaving has been used for making the wall arts in combination with textile.

They wanted to play with different materials and get the new innovative look created for the wall art and cabinets. Therefore, InLiving introduced the combination of textile and wood to give a mother’s touch to the furniture. They pulled out some basic materials like cotton recycled yarns, outdoor yarns, denim, leather labels lying dormant from the surroundings and used their imagination to explore vibrant fusion pieces.

[easy-image-collage id=5357]

This assembling is a testament to their creative instinct and out of the box thinking. Cross stitch work on the wooden panels has been done to stay close to our urban style & add graphic style in living spacesThese innovative designs of Wall art, cabinets and wooden panels blends beautifully with various aesthetic sensibilities. I happen to meet Ms Pallavi Gupta, the woman behind InLiving and it was a pleasure knowing all these details first hand from her.

India Design ID 2017- Creativity at next level..!!

India Deign ID, is one exhibition that I look forward to every year, It really satiates my need to witness some creativity live, and OMG what creativity. This exhibition truly is an abode of creativity, so many designers, so many exquisite showcases under one roof that one cant help but keep staring and admiring the collection. The exhibition that helps create a new generation of creative and business-based talent factories to help fuel the design economy of the country, India Design ID recognises and celebrates designers and creativity from diverse disciplines in designing – interiors, product design, architecture and installations.

The event comprised of three verticals – ID Exhibit, ID Symposium and ID Satellite. This collaboration aims to bring together the design community to share their experiences, knowledge and aesthetics through exhibitions, installations and discussions.

Commenting on the initiative, Gaurav Mashruwala, CEO, Ogaan Media Pvt. Ltd.  says, “This year we celebrate 5 years of India Design ID and over this time period, it has not only become the country’s premier design celebration but has very effectively changed the definition of good design & architecture in India.

ID EXHIBIT is an exhibition space that showcased the finest in home decoration, with high-end brands and designers unveiling their latest collections. This year, India Design ID presented themed pavilions, namely Decoration, Decoration I, Decoration II, Design and Trends. Housed within the Decoration Pavilion being the best in décor, the Trends Pavilion presented the Colour Next trend forecasts for 2017, and the Design Pavilion showcased the talents of designers and design labels.

The Decoration Pavilion included established names such as Arttd’inox, Apartment9,  Antonio Lupi, Beyond Designs, K2India, Roca, BoConcept, Sarita Handa, The Pure Concept and Rational Kitchens by CJ Living to name a few.

Apartment 9 had breathtakingly beautiful interiors and was truly a class apart. Those who seek luxury and opulence, this is the brand that should be remembered.

Next I was awestruck, when I saw the statement chairs and dining table display by Kanika Bawa, must compliment the knowledge and vision the lady holds. I got a chance to personally interact with her and know more about her collection, and it would be an understatement to say that I was extremely impressed.

Her candy floss collection was no less than an ensemble cast, we see in movies, or we see in our own families when we look deep down. Every family has that man of the family, the father, the simple yet the strongest character, mother, the book lover, the drama queen, the fashionista, the gamer and the love dove couple to name a few, and her chairs of the dining table reflected each of these characters with great simplicity and design. It was a treat to watch this collection and I am sure that I am myself going to add a couple of chairs to my home and dedicate them to my family members.

[easy-image-collage id=5304]

K2 India and BoConcept were the other two pavilions that I admired a lot and so was the collection by Sarita Handa

[easy-image-collage id=5312]

The Trend Pavilion featured designer interpretations of the colour trends forecast for 2017. Asian Paints announced intense blue as their Colour Next 2017 forecasts at the event to supplement the efforts of creating awareness and backing the design intent of India Design ID 2017. There was also a third Decoration pavilion which is an addition to India Design ID 2017 which featured new exhibitors namely, 2R Italian Design, Alex Davis, Casa Medici/Golden Locks, iGuzzini/LSI, Intersekt, Italian Trade Agency, Ora Mosaic

ID Symposium, which seeks to inspire the design fraternity in India, and also offer a networking opportunity to build relationships within the industry. ID Symposium featured engaging speakers from different walks of life, such as Alberto Alessi, Humberto Campana, Sou Fujimoto, Ashiesh Shah, Sanjay Puri, Alberto Meda, Li Edelkoort to name a few.

ID Satellite, the hip offsite vertical discovers design districts of Delhi with promotions, collaborations and events across different venues through week long festivities at design districts like Lado Sarai, Meharchand Market, Shahpur Jat, Defence Colony, and MG Road with new additions at Khan Market and Greater Kailash which will have the capital buzzing with design. The participating venues will feature design-linked activities across lifestyle stores, restaurants, malls, bookshops, galleries, select public/private locations, with an explosion of launches, new collections, cocktails, previews, reviews and special events.

The event saw over 40,000 visitors, from the design trade as well as design-conscious consumers and I already look forward to the next season.
