Urinary Tract Infections In Women- 7 Ways To Avoid It

It’s a known fact that women are more prone to Urinary Tract Infections than men and there are scientific reasons behind the same.

Women have a shorter urethra, the tube that brings urine out of the bladder and because of this bacterias enter the urethra and bladder more easily. Also, a woman’s urethral opening is closer to the anus, where most UTI-causing bacteria are found.

Urinary Tract Infection

Some other things that could trigger a UTI include:

  • Frequent and Unprotected Sex
  • Multiple Sex Partners
  • Some Birth Control Pills
  • Menopause

If you have ever had a UTI, you would know that it can be extremely painful and irritating with that burning sensation while urinating or the offensive odour and frequent urination. And any kind of an infection in our body is not a healthy sign.

While you may not be able to avoid UTIs every time, but there are some tips that can surely help you prevent it, more often than not. Let’s see what they are:

Don’t Hold Your Urine

This simply means that hold your urine for too long and allow the bacteria to go in your bladder. Just pee when you have to. In regular scenarios one should pass urine at least once in 3-4 hours and completely empty your bladder.

Wipe It The Correct Way

Make sure you always wipe your bottom the correct way, that is front to back and not back to front because as discussed above, its the anal opening where maximum bacterial growth happens.

Women Hygiene Products

Proper women hygiene is of utmost importance in order to avoid any infections. But be careful about the women hygiene products that you use, as some of them do have irritants. For me, there is one brand that I blindly trust- Everteen Natural. My regime includes washing my private parts with the Everteen Natural Intimate Wash and just recently Everteen has also launched an Everteen Toilet Seat Sanitizer. For me, this product is such a blessing as I have always been prone to UTIs and get them quite frequently..

Everteen Toilet Seat Sanitiser is a dermatologically tested product, it easily fits into your handbag or purse and with its pleasant fragrance, in just 5 seconds you can be assured of a germ-free toilet seat. As the sanitiser cleans the seat and evaporates in just a few seconds, you would not need to wipe it before using the sanitised seat. Its readily available from the Everteen Website or on other e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart or Nykaa.

Use Toilet Before And After Sex

To reduce the risk of getting infection while having sex, urinate before and after having sex, in order to flush out the bacteria. It’s good to gently wash your intimate parts as well to keep the area clean.

Drink Plenty Of Water

Staying hydrated through the day helps keeping your bladder healthy in check. Aim for 6-8 glasses of water and you can also have other fluids like green teas or vegetable and fruit smoothies. The idea is to pee frequently enough to not let the bacteria grow in your body.

Water

Wear Comfortable Underwear

Yes, it does play an important role, especially while sleeping , try and avoid tight fitted or synthetic underwear and wear slightly loose and comfortable cotton underwears so that there is no moisture held that aggravates the bacterial growth..

Underwear

Check with Your Doctor

If you are on birth control pills or past menopause, do consult with your gynaecologist. As some birth control pills have irritants while on the other hand your doctor could guide you about vaginal estrogen in case you have already hit menopause.

Doctor

Well, these are some of the tips you can keep in mind in order to prevent frequent UTIs, but in case you develop symptoms like frequent urination, burning sensation while urinating, lower abdomen pain or fever, don’t forget to visit your doctor for an anti-biotic course that would help you control the infection.

I was having a problem a while back and after a few doctor’s visits, I was able to make a change to the underwear that I was wearing and up my water intake – it made a HUGE difference! Don’t underestimate these little changes.
