Laughter Comes In Its Best Form At The Mon-Key Shanti Theatre Festival- Day 1

Laughter truly is the best medicine, there can be nothing better than to hold on to your stomach and roll on the floor laughing to the content of your heart. But in today’s stressful life, laughter doesn’t come easy and at such a time the Mon-Key Shanti Theatre Festival by 3 Bells Productions came in as a perfect rescue. Its a two day long theatre festival that brings five of the country’s top running shows, not just comedy but also some soul searching dramas. This was the second season for the festival and I am sure it would be much more successful than their earlier edition.

13880239_920169294758930_5260218358107976397_n

Today being the first day, two shows were planned and both were in the genre of comedy. The first play was ‘Perfect Wedding’. An English Comedy Play ‘Perfect Wedding’, directed by Dushyant Babbar is a laughter riot with chaos and confusion created by an appalling situation.

IMG_5767
A bridegroom wakes on his wedding morning in his own bridal suite, with his bride-to-be about to arrive any moment, and finds a strange girl in bed beside him. What’s more an extremely attractive girl whom, in the depths of his post stag-night hangover, he can’t remotely remember even having been introduced to. Worse – during the ensuing panic to get the stranger dressed and out of the way, the bride arrives, the girl is trapped in the bathroom, the best man pretends the hidden girl is his girl friend, his real girl friend has to be kept ignorant of the fact, and the hotel chamber maid gets mistaken for everybody’s girl friend. By the time the bride’s parents and half the hotel staff get in on the act, the chaos reaches nuclear proportions! It is that rare combination – a riotous comedy and a touching love story at the same time.

IMG_5776

Dushant’s direction and his acting, both were commendable. He was simply the show stealer with his spontaneous act. Also the show is written very well, the dialogues are real and one can easily relate to them, they are simple to understand and yet very impactful. I loved the play and thoroughly enjoyed the confusions. There was a subtle message in the play that one needs to really be very sure of the decisions we make in life and especially like getting married to someone. One should not just go by what others say but really evaluate if we have found the right person and then only take such a big decision of life.

IMG_5772

Written and directed by M. Sayeed Alam, a political science teacher-turned-full time-theatre practitioner ‘Cut…Cut…Cut’ was the second show of the evening and having seen Ghalib in Delhi by Sayeed Alam, my expectations from this show were super high and I wasn’t disappointed a bit. Slapstick comedy which is built in day to day situations is an art that Sayeed Alam captures very well in his plays.

IMG_5755

Tragedy for them…comedy for us ‘CutCutCut’ comically deals with the chaos, catastrophes and calamities that strike Pierrot’s Troupe whenever it rehearses a play.
In the process, the play brings forth funny characters; hilarious situations; comic relationships and bizarre events, besides taking an amusing look into many more problems that a theatre group faces.

IMG_5777

The play opens with the director being stressed and harassed rehearsing for his upcoming show with his bunch of actors and the script writer whose only job is to correct the horribly wrong accent or ‘Talafuz’ (as called in the play) of the actors. The ego clashes between the director and script writer leave people in splits. The comedy isn’t forced, but built in beautifully in the situations. As they day of performance comes nearer, the irritation of the director keeps increasing, and so does the chaos. Finally the day of performance arises and is showcased very beautifully with both back stage and on stage drama. How the director keeps improvising his actors and prompts them to do better, his frustration on their wrongs and constant contrast of backstage and on stage is sheer fun to watch.

IMG_5747

Harish Chabbra who plays the role of the director was truly the show stopper. His acting skills are remarkable and the ease that he brings about in his dialogue delivery and his comic timing is just super. Rest of the cast was commendable as well. I really enjoyed the show and look forward to more shows by Pierrot’s Troupe as I have become a big fan of Sayeed Alam’s direction.

IMG_5780

It was a Saturday well spent and I am so looking forward to the plays scheduled for tomorrow. If you have missed being at the Mon- Key Shanti Theatre Festival today, please don’t miss it tomorrow. They have some amazing shows lined up. ‘Uproute’ which is a physical theatre piece exploring the subject of home and exile, based on three of Miguel Cervantes’ Exemplary Novels. The performance consists of three short pieces that explore the aforementioned recurring themes in Cervantes’ writing.
Mahesh Dattani’s ‘Dance Like A Man’ centres on an individual’s plight, where a dying form of art serves as the backdrop.
And ‘MASSAGE’ that tells the story of Happy Kumar, a common man who comes to the big city of Mumbai with his pockets empty but dreams of becoming a hero. He passes through ups and downs, successes and failures, hope and despair, joys and sorrows, lanes and by lanes of the city. In this two-hour monologue, Rakesh Bedi enacts 24 different characters.

For tickets and other queries, do follow 3 Bells Productions and make most of The Mon-Key Shanti Theatre Festival.Enjoy!

Black Dog Easy Evenings with Sorabh Pant

Black Dog Sparkling Water from the house of Diageo, recently organized a fun-filled evening, what they fondly call as Black Dog Easy Evenings. As part of these easy evenings, Black Dog gets in different artists for performance across bars and restaurants and let people enjoy an evening filled with loads of fun and excitement. This time it was the Black Dog Easy Evenings with Sorabh Pant, a household name in the field of stand up comedy at a well-known & popular restrobar called Raasta in Hauz Khas Village.

IMG_5388

The evening was truly funfilled from start to finish. From the moment Sorabh Pant climbed on the stage to the time he finally ended the show, it was like watching a live wire all through. I cannot simply explain this man and his talent in words; you have to watch him to believe the energy he has. His jokes were apt as per the audience, they were topical yet very spontaneous. I mean seriously his quick fit is truly commendable. His interaction with people and coming with crazy one-liners was something to watch out for. The whole atmosphere was filled with noises of laughter, whistles, cheering sounds and applauses as this man went on continuously for two hours cracking people up with his jokes and impromptu reactions.

Sorabh Pant brought down the house at Black Dog ‘Easy Evenings’ (2)

IMG_5370

And the moments become more fun when you are sipping Black Dog whisky, which is so smooth and relishing some amazing food at Raasta.
I tried the Chicken Quesadillas and Herb Fried Fish Fingers. The chicken filling of the quesadillas was very good and the fish was crisp from the outside and tender inside. I loved both the dishes.

“I keep coming back to Delhi, thanks to the great vibes and the enthusiasm of the audience. In a city like this, it’s super easy to get caught up in a frenzied, hectic lifestyle and it makes me feel good to be able to give them that much-needed break. I’m glad I can give the people of Delhi a good laugh and help them unwind a little. With ‘Easy Evenings’ by Black Dog Sparkling Water, I am all geared up to show the people of Delhi how humour is the best way to unwind and enjoy a relaxed evening,” said, Sorabh Pant.

Teesri Panchayat-Redefining the concept of partying on weekends with Myolo

As we are all aware after the hard grind at work during the week we all look forward to the weekend. To meet our friends and party away.
What generally ensues is long conversations between friends to choose a venue which is suitable to all and more so it has to pocket friendly too. Generally speaking all these pubs bars and restaurants today are frightfully expensive. So to find a decent place with reasonable prices is quite a task. Now here is where Myolo comes in with a refreshing concept of House Party.
Members are sent invites through social media and networking for the party which is held in a house.

IMG_4015

4
The entry fee is 300/Rs for which a pint of beer is free.
For every subsequent beer you take it costs you Rs 99/.
They also have a sort of quiz at the bar and if you get the answers right the pint will cost you Rs 50/
They have a game called beer pong for which you can register and play.
The winner is entitled to free beer all through the evening.
The atmosphere is downright casual with some lounge sofas thrown in.
You don’t have to worry about dressing up just the shorts tees and comfy footwear will do.
What I mean is anything will do.
You get the chance to mingle and make new friends.
Now when we go to any restaurant pub or a bar there is no entertainment value available apart from large screen TVs.
Here is where Myolo scores big.
They have an evening spread out with great entertainment value. This as they fondly called was the Teesri Panchayat, the third evening in a live performance series events. The next Saturday will be the Grand Finale between those who have performed in the last three weeks.
You have a stand up comedy act and the one I attended was superbly done by Amar a stand up comedian. The act was specifically youth oriented and enjoyable.

6

IMG_4026
Then they have an open slot for a five minute performance by budding artists.
This time it was another stand up comedy act by a young and upcoming artist Rishabh, which was commendable.

IMG_4020
7
Then came the slot for some Sher-O-Shayari.
This was presented by Honeish Batra and I was quite impressed with the young fellow who had incorporated lot of modern day content into his Shayari.

IMG_4037
Last but not the least there was a live musical performance by Prabhjot and he sang some awesome English songs, melodious and foot tapping too.

2

IMG_4039
Lovely performances.
All this while you are lounging on the sofa a bottle of chilled beer in your hands with some chips and peanuts provided on the house.
Really a nice way to party with no hang ups .Just the cool casual atmosphere with friends all around.
For the young its the ideal way to spend your weekend with friends without hurting your pocket with entertainment galore.

Delhi gets its first regular Milonga curated by Tango Maestros Kiran Sawhney and Eduardo

1st July Friday saw none other than Tango Maestros Kiran Sawhney and Eduardo organizing the official launch of Delhi Milonga at the Eros Hotel, Nehru Place.

tango-in-delhi

Milonga is typically an event where Tango is danced. Milongas are usually regular in nature, like once a week, and begins with Tango class and demonstrations followed by networking with like minded people who share their passion for Tango over drinks and food.

DSC_0003-2

This was my first time at attending such an event and I must admit that it has been a very pleasant experience indeed. It was truly a memorable evening. The evening started with a Tango demonstration and practice class where in Tango enthusiasts tried their hand, oops not hand but their feet at dance. The ambience of Bar & Lounge at Eros made a perfect setting for Tango Session.

Tango is a partner dance that originated in the 1880s along the River Plate, the natural border between Argentina and Uruguay, and soon spread to the rest of the world.

DSC_0011-3

Music and dance elements of tango are popular in activities related to gymnastics, figure skating, synchronized swimming, etc., because of its dramatic feeling and its cultural associations with romance.

It has been suggested that tango makes people feel more relaxed, sexier, and less depressed, and increases testosterone levels.Tangolates is an exercise method that combines the core stability of Pilates with the concentration, coordination and fluid movement of Tango, designed in 2004 by Tamara Di Tella. Utilizing a partner-method and incorporating the aerobic or cardio element of music, it started as a rehabilitation technique for patients with severe dysfunctions of the nervous system.

After the dance class, Kiran and Eduardo officially launched the Delhi Milonga with their breath-taking performance. It was sheer poetry in motion. Both of them are pros and watching them dance is magical, you just transform into a different world. It’s so soothing to the eyes and relaxing to the mind.

Kiran Sawhney is the first professionally trained Tango teacher in Delhi/India.Traveled all over the world, attended various Tango festivals, classes, practicas and milongas in UK, Tokyo, Dubai, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Singapore, Paris, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, New York and Buenos Aires, in her pursuit for Tango. Learnt from the best Tango teachers in the world. Studied (Tango teacher training program) and apprenticed with master teacher, Daniel Trenner. Teaches Argentine Tango in New Delhi. Organizes, practicas, milongas (Milonga de Mis Amores) and Tango festival. Also manufactures, sells and exports Tango dresses and shoes under her own brand name- Mis Amores. Kiran is not just a pro in Tango but a lot of other dance forms like Zumba, Bharatnatyam and Contemporary too. She also runs the New Delhi Tango School and passes on her expertise to those who want to learn Tango.

DSC_0019-3

On the other hand, Eduardo is Minister at The Embassy of Mexico and has been engaged in dance since 12 years and is shares the responsibility in teaching the students of NDTS the grooves of Tango.

DSC_0255-5

Kiran Sawhney says, “I view Argentine Tango as a physical expression of the pain, the passion, and the life. It is a non-verbal language, to express oneself in new ways. It is a wonder drug that makes you younger, sexier, more philosophical, and more of who you really are. It is a way of life.”

I have two left feet and though I would love to explore all forms of dancing, it doesn’t come naturally to me but at the event I did try a few basic moves with Eudardo and enjoyed it a lot. It was great fun and I look forward to being part of more Milongas in time to come.

DSC_0223-3

If you are looking at learning the moves of Tango, Delhi Milonga is the place for you. It will be going on for quite sometime at the Eros Hotel and you can find more details here at Delhi Milonga and NDTS for the upcoming events and classes.

I wish Kiran and Eduardo all the very best for their future endeavours.
